For a beginner programmer, what would be a good language or program to learn?

I want to learn how to program. What beginner program can anyone recommend to learn? I have heard of C++ but I have also heard that that program is a little bit too much for a beginner and that I should learn something simpler like visual basics.

Thanks in advance.

C is actually a very good language to start out in, and then move on to C++ and C# (same language really... just more features available).

PHP isn't a bad place to start if you're looking for something more web-oriented.
Reply:Mandarin cuz its a fruit and language at the same time! And it's the most common language in the world.
Reply:yeah c++ is very nice and easier than others I am learning it too in my university %26amp; I 'm in the first year of soft ware engineering. %26amp; also there is lot to learn after it that if u go to past u will never find enough time to learn all languages
Reply:I'd start with something like BASIC or QBASIC- its not really useful, but its an easy introduction to variables, commands, and everything else you'd be doing.

That was my first language.
Reply:If you have Excel, you already have a programming language of sorts. OK it's Visual Basic for applications but it will still give you a basic intro to programming and it's free. Press Alt + F11 to access the VBA interface from Excel. Books on VBA can be bought reasonably easily from PC World or Amazon and the Microsoft series are a good place to start. Good Luck
