How would I become a very good programmer?

I want to learn c++ first. I have studied theory many a times from Yashwant Kanetkar's"Let Us C++" but I want to practice and the problem is I am not getting any goood book to practice.I am in second year of my college and I have an IT branch.I want to learn many other languages as well.If you are an experienced person,then please help me.....

How would I become a very good programmer?
The best way would be to get a mentor and some classes. C++ is a object oriented language. Until and unless you understand these concepts, any book wont help you. You should try to understand why this language is made in first place. One tip, whenever you study a topic, just ask this question to yourself.

I do have good understanding of C++, please free to ask me.
Reply:well to be a good programmer you have to be updated with the new technologies coming in the market i have also read Yashwant Kanetkar's"Let Us C++" it is good but if you want something better than that you can search google for the better learning sites about programming one i tried for VB and SQL was w3school.com check this one it may help you
Reply:learn C den C++ and also Java,Pearl,Python etc
Reply:try solving the practice problems at the end of each chapter, also try to build some real life solutions, this will help you gain better knowledge of programming.

I think you need some basic grounding with programming, then only you can think of going with only theory
Reply:Balagurusamy's book on c++ is good .. it's called "OOPS with C++" .. Try Writing some programs ...

All the Best Dude ....
Reply:no matter wat textbok u take...u gotta do the exercises given behind each chapter...leave it n im pretty sure u have do not know nething about the topic...except to blabber out the definitions in the topic...n yashwant kanetkar is a good book...
Reply:for c++ u can try BALAGURUSAMY's book. but i don't remember it's name right now.
Reply:If you want to be a good programmer... go for pure OOP language i.e Java....

Java is easy to learn and is a very vast language... also it becomes easy to other languages once you learnt this...
Reply:Well see, what i can do is give you quite a few ebooks on c++, SQL and Visual Basic, and as far as the rest is concerned, i think you should get a pc set up with all the programming languages installed. That is the best option, since you wud do things perfectly then.
