What are the challenges to get a programmer job in Dubai (UAE)?
Dubai has a burgeoning IT industry, largely located in Dubai Internet City, Dubai Silicon Oasis and Dubai Media City. Most of the large IT companies now have offices in Dubai. With the government e-government initiatives, there are also many opportunities there. Oracle is very popular, but .NET technologies are also widely used. Abu Dhabi is also a major centre in UAE for IT. You may want to check out companies like Injazat. Personally, I prefer Abu Dhabi to Dubai.
The key skills are:
Fluent English
Excellent communications
Excellent project management skills
Excellent technical skills (programming, design)
Arabic isn't really the language of commerce here now. English is. With the good localization tools available now, it's the job of translators to make sure that the Arabic text is inserted correctly into the application or web site.
One issue for Westerners is that IT professionals from India have traditionally been a cheaper source of labour. That seems to be changing as the US dollar declines against the rupee and the local IT industry in India increases in its strength and amount of compensation.
