Is this a question about what career path you should follow?
Neither industry looks like it is running out of steam or will do any time soon. If you have the skills, you should be able to get a job in either sector.
Which are your favorite, can't-live-without-them programs? It's probably sensible to aim to work on programs like them.
A lot of traditional desktop apps are being replaced by online versions at the moment and, for what it's worth, web programming seems much more exciting to me.
